Biography

Austin P. McKenzie is an actor originally from Mesa, Arizona. He spent his early adult years studying to be a special needs teacher before getting bit by the acting bug. He made his official acting debut in 2014, starring as Melchior Gabor in Spring Awakening at Los Angeles’ Deaf West Theatre. The play was performed in both spoken English and in American Sign Language, calling on Austin’s studies. A raging success, the stage production was transferred to Broadway, with Austin in tow. You may have caught a snippet of this performance when he performed at The 70th Annual Tony Awards in 2016. Austin’s career has since consisted of both stage productions and on-camera work. He had an impressive TV debut, playing Cleve Jones in the Gus Van Sant-directed mini-series When We Rise (2017), where you can catch him shirtless and making out with his male co-star. Also on the little screen, you can catch him as Conrad Roy in the TV movie Conrad & Michelle: If Words Could Kill (2018) with Bella Thorne (notice how Mr. Man refrains from any editorial comments on Bella; this is about Austin). On the big screen, he played Howie Hawthorn in the indie film Speech & Debate (2017), and Fred in the bigger film Unhinged (2020) with Russell Crowe. And, in what Mr. Man considers to be one of the best-named roles on Mr. McKenzie’s resumes, he also took on the part of “Naked Young Man” in the short file In the Time it Takes to Get There (2019). The official response: not long at all.
