What does the “B” in Courtney B. Vance stand for? Judging by the way he looks, we think it could be big, broad, bodacious Blackman or beautifully-built brainy babe. But actually it’s for “Bernard.” After obtaining a BA from Harvard and MFA from Yale, Courtney kicked off his acting career on Broadway in the original productions of August Wilson’s Fences (1985), John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation (1990), and Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy (2013) for which he won a Tony. Equally successful on television, Mr. Vance portrayed Johnnie Cochran for FX’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016) which earned him a Primetime Emmy. The esteemed actor picked up another Emmy for his guest spot on HBO’s Lovecraft Country (2020). Through the years, Courtney lent his sexy presence to other TV shows (Law & Order, Picket Fences, The Closer, Revenge, Scandal, Masters of Sex) and movies (Hamburger Hill, The Hunt For Red October, State of Affairs, Terminator Genisys). He can be seen in The Mummy (2017) starring Tom Cruise and heard in Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (2018). He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys (2000), Robert Altman’s Cookie’s Fortune (1999), and Penny Marshall’s The Preacher’s Wife (1996).
