Spooky and sexy, replete with murky, mysterious settings, director Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973) is a fantastical descent into the murkiest, most mysterious depths of emotional consciousness. The dank canals and ill-lit church interiors of Venice, Italy, stand in for the labyrinthine recesses that form the intersection of the human mind and soul. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie are a married couple whose daughter has drowned in the near past. Her loss buffets their bond like the water in the canals laps at the very sidewalks they walk on. Has Christie been taken from Sutherland, or is she only momentarily standing unseen around a corner? Will Julie find Donald and whisk him from Venice before his is the next body found floating and murdered in the drink? As Donald enters Julie’s labia-inthine recesses, he shows his thick pubes and adorable behind in a sensual scene of fornication. Don’t listen to the title of the flick—open your eyes and enjoy Donald’s derrière.
