Review

Considering filmmaker Stephen Soderbergh burst onto the skinematic scene with Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), it’s no surprise he directed Full Frontal (2002). In fact, Miramax initially billed this pic as a sequel to that flick. With such a sexy title, you know Full Frontal will flash some flesh! The R-rated dramedy follows a day in the lives of several Hollywoodies who come together to attend a birthday party held in honor of a big shot producer named Gus (David Duchovny). As far as a plot, that’s all we’ve got. But if you’re looking for some serious skin, check out the X-Files (1993-2018) star getting X-rated when he asks Linda (Mary McCormack) to “release his tension” during a massage. Later, Mr. Duchovny’s blurry pubes and man jewels are on display after his untimely death, presumably due to erotic asphyxiation. What a way to go! The film also features Soderbergh regulars Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts as well as an ensemble cast of characters including Carl (David Hyde Price), Lee (Catherine Keener), Tracy (January Jones), and Terence Stamp as himself. Who else would we want him to be? No need to raise your hand (or another part of your anatomy) since this is a rhetorical question. Of course, there’s no question that Nicholas (Blair Underwood) is hot. In one scene, the caramel-colored cutie shows off his chiseled chest. Alas, he keeps his underwood covered up. Maybe that’s why this pic was dissed by most critics. Nevertheless, Full Frontal is worth a partial rental!
