Often voted by scientists as one of the most realistic and plausible visions of the future ever seen in a science fiction flick, Andrew Niccol's Gattaca (1997) imagines a future where a person's DNA decides their lot in life. Genetic testing means only the "valids" with the best genes are born, though every now and again a parent will have a baby the natural way and roll the dice on their genes. Dubbed invalids, Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) is one of these naturally born children. His genes are trash, so his parents go the genetic testing route to make his brother Anton (Loren Dean). Obviously, his little brother beats him at everything, but when Vincent bests his little bro in a swimming contest by risking death to win, something awakens him. He might have a bad ticker, but he's all heart! Dreaming of becoming an astronaut, Vincent knows he's as good as anyone else, but that he'll get rejected by the program after one DNA test. Luckily, a silver medalist swimmer named Jerome Morrow (Jude Law) has been injured, left a paraplegic, and is in desperate need of money. He agrees to let Vincent pretend to be him, lets him move into his beach house, and gives him everything from blood to pee to hair samples to fake his genetics. Things go swimmingly until just before the launch, when someone is murdered in the office and the cops start investigating. Is Vincent going to get caught or get to see the stars? With the tagline "there is no gene for the human spirit" this motivational tale has become beloved since it first hit the big screens. But if you ask Mr. Man there's a huge plot hole: Ethan Hawke is genetically perfect! Sure, he has heart issues and needs glasses, but genetics be damned, watching him shower who wouldn't want to stick their hand down his jeans? Then, at one point we get to see everyone's nineties teen dream at the beach scrubbing his dead skin off with the sand. His abs are tight, his jawline is chiseled, and best of all his ass is elite! Astronaut or not, that ass is truly out of this world! Gattaca? More like Gyat-aca!
