Hannibal (2001)

Review

Since Jonathan Demme’s Oscar-winning pic The Silence of the Lambs (1991) was such a phenomenal success, it’s no surprise it spawned big and small screen sequels. And thanks to Gary Oldman’s nudity, we’re partial to the psychological crime thriller Hannibal (2001), even though we also love the NBC series Hannibal (2013-2015) starring Mads Mikkelsen in the title role. Based on the same-named novel by Thomas Harris, Ridley Scott’s R-rated flick follows FBI Agent Clarice Starling (now played by Julianne Moore) following escaped cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). He’s lurking around Europe and hiding behind the new name of Dr. Fell. Of course, Clarice isn’t the only one chasing the crazed killer. Mason Verger (Oldman) is also after him due to the $3 million bounty that’s on his head. Speaking of, your head may turn when you get a gander at the veteran head-turners in the cast. There’s American hottie Ray Liotta as Paul Krendler; Italian eyeful Giancarlo Giannini as Chief Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi; and British beauty Robert Rietti as Sogliato. Sure, these guys might be a little past their prime but they still retain a healthy dose of onscreen charisma. Nevertheless, the movie’s true scene stealer is Mr. Oldman. During a flashback, the skintastic actor recounts his character’s encounter with Lecter. As the scene unfolds, we see him from behind with his pants around his ankles! Even in his middle-age, Gary’s glutes look so good Mr. Man wants to devour them with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Bone appétit!
