Biography

Globally known for playing villains and tough guys, Jack Palance was born with the Ukrainian name Volodymyr Palahniuk. Now, that’s a mouthful! Let’s shorten it to sex symbol. Actually, the Pennsylvania native went by Jack Brazzo when he was a boxer. But after serving in the Air Forces during WWII, the brave babe decided to be an actor. While at Stanford University, he worked as a photographer’s model, lifeguard, and soda jerk! Talk about a Jack of all trades. Once the hottie made his movie debut in Elia Kazan’s film noir Panic in the Streets (1950), fans felt Panic in the Slacks! Equally popular with critics and colleagues, Palance nabbed Oscar nominations for his supporting work in the thriller Sudden Fear (1952) and the Western Shane (1953). Decades later, he took the gold home for the comedy City Slickers (1991). In between, Jack could be seen alongside Brigitte Bardot in Jean-Luc Godard’s French flick Le Mépris (1963); Vittorio De Sica’s Italian drama The Last Judgment (1961); and the Spaghetti Western The Mercenary (1968) which showcases Jack’s naked T&A! Meanwhile on the small screen, the handsome hunk won an Emmy for Requiem for a Heavyweight (1957). Since then, he portrayed Count Dracula in the TV movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1974) and hosted the ABC series Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (1982-1986). In 2006, Palance passed away but he leaves behind a legacy of movies (Batman, Che!, Marquis de Sade: Justine, Oklahoma Crude, The Professionals, The Silver Chalice, Young Guns) you’ve got to see!
