Review

In a small French colony during the mid nineteenth century, partners in alcohol consumption Ariel Neel Auguste and Louis Olliver (Emir Kusturica and Reynald Bouchard) kill a local boat captain Jean (Daniel Auteuil) during a bender, upsetting the small town. Ariel is sentenced to die, but Louis is killed in a carriage accident on the way to prison. While waiting for the guillotine and executioner to arrive, the death row dude is invited by the murdered captain’s wife Pauline (Juliette Binoche) to help her in her garden. Ariel becomes a popular person in the village, saving buildings and people’s lives and eventually marrying. No one wants to see the redeemed killer executed, except The Governor (Michel Duchaussoy) and the council politicians. The end of La Veuve de Saint-Pierre (2000) will surprise you. Also, the fact that this is a French film and there’s hardly any nudity will also surprise you. We get a brief view of Daniel Auteuil’s bottom as he plows Juliette Binoche. It’s shot from a distance and it’s not clear, so you’ll have to squint and use your imagination to get in the mood for lust.
