Based on true events, the Lifetime movie Prayers for Bobby (2009) presents the story of the Griffiths, a close-knit religious family that faces upheaval when their son Bobby (Ryan Kelley) comes out of the closet and announces that he’s gay. While Bobby’s father (Henry Czerny) and his siblings slowly come to terms with his sexuality, mom (Sigourney Weaver) isn’t quite as rational. With her Bible firmly within in her grasp, mom forces her son to see a psychiatrist while pushing him deeper into the world of religion in hopes of curing him of his homosexuality. Mom sounds like a real winner! As Bobby follows through his mother’s madness, he quickly gets lost in a sea of depression, eventually moves out of the house, and lands a boyfriend, David (Scott Bailey), a hunky dude he meets at a gay bar. But Bobby can’t enjoy life, especially when his mother’s negative words burned into his brain. Seeing no happy future, Bobby chooses suicide by eighteen-wheeler. With the tragedy of her son’s death haunting her every move, mom finally changes her homophobic ways, ditches her religious buddies, and becomes a voice for the LGBT community. Though there isn’t any skin in this emotional flick, we do get a sensual moment of smooching between the handsome Ryan Kelley and attractive Scott Bailey. Well, it looks like one of Mr. Man’s prayers was answered!
