Review

Mr. Man is guessing even vegans can stomach Red Meat (1997) since the movie has more to do with flashing human flesh on camera than consuming animals in sensorama. Under the pen and direction of Allison Burnett, the black comedy takes place at a restaurant where a trio of buddies — Chris (Stephen Mailer), Stefan (John Slattery) and Victor (James Frain) — kiss and tell about the chicks they’ve been with. These women include Ruth (Lara Flynn Boyle), Candice (Jennifer Grey), Connie (Traci Lind), Donna (Billie Neal), Isis (Julia Pearlstein), Mia (Heidi Lenhart), Nan (Andrea Roth), Ula (Anna Karin), and a prostitute (Dee Freeman). Based on Burnett’s unpublished novel “Orwell’s Year” (1987), the plot revolves around men behaving badly. Luckily, these guys also expose their sweet sides, ie: their skin! While discussing their sexual histories over a meal of red meat (a metaphor if there ever was one), the viewer bares witness to a series of flashbacks. Speaking of baring, Mr. Slattery exposes his chest and butt while scrubbing up in the tub just 13 minutes into the flick. He also reveals his naked T&A while strutting his stuff at the 57-minute mark. But not before he and Mr. Mailer literally hang out at the sauna. In another scene, Mr. Frain displays his shirtless frame as well as his bulging briefs. Of course, Stefan takes the cake when he appears in the kitchen wearing nothing but an apron. As he serves up his hot buns, all we can say is bone appétit!
