Review

Having already released the singles “Space Oddity” in 1969, “Life on Mars?” in 1971 and “Starman” in 1972, Glam rocker David Bowie was the perfect person to step into the titular role of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), not to be confused with Showtime’s sci-fi series The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022) starring Chiwetel Ejiofor. Under the direction of Nicolas Roeg, this cult classic includes Buck Henry as Oliver V. Farnsworth and astronaut Jim Lovell as himself! Based on the same-named novel by Walter Tevis, the R rated flick centers around androgynous space alien Thomas Jerome Newton (Bowie) who crash lands on Mother Earth. Newton soon learns being a thin young dude during America’s sexually active 1970s is not without its privileges as he repeatedly ploughs Mary-Lou (Candy Clark). The skintastic act showcases David’s alabaster ass. If that’s not arousing enough, Bowie goes full frontal! No wonder he won the Saturn Award for Best Actor. Of course, he’s not the only one having fun. A naked Dr. Nathan Bryce (Rip Torn) gets his cock grabbed by Jill (Hilary Holland) 29 minutes into the movie. Plus, the aptly-named Peters (Bernie Casey) goes skinny-dipping at the 01:43:27-minute mark. When the wet gent exposes his bare butt and the head of his shaft, you’ll splash your pants! This flesh-filled fable of alienation and the attraction of otherness is stacked with some of the most stimulating sex ever simulated. In other words, The Man Who Fell to Earth puts the X into eXtraterrestrial!
