Adapted from the Anita Shreve novel of the same name, the crime drama The Weight of Water (2000) stars Catherine McCormack as Jean James, a magazine photographer doing research on an ax murderer involving the untimely deaths of two immigrant women in the late nineteenth century. Her investigation takes her and her husband Thomas (Sean Penn), a well-known poet, and his younger brother, Rich (Josh Lucas) to the Isle of Shoals, the location where the killings took place. Jean and Thomas hope to mix business with pleasure in an attempt to ease the tension of their troubled marriage. But Rich’s girlfriend, Adaline (Elizabeth Hurley), a seductress with a hankering for poets, quickly puts a stop to an rekindled romance when she sets her sights on Thomas. When Jean turns up some paperwork that sheds new light on the murder case, she soon finds that her life and the lives of the victims have a similar arch. Spooky stuff! Ulrich Thomsen eases the tension of the film by baring his butt and backsack when he strips down for his wife. That’s one fine ass!
