Review

Based on the play "Urban Folk Tales," Jon Shear's directorial debut Urbania (2000) is a trippy adventure through the streets of Manhattan. Dan Futterman stars as Charlie, a restless soul who spends his nights wandering the streets of NYC looking for a man he spent the night with a while back. Charlie has a boyfriend named Chris (Matt Keeslar) but he's obsessed with finding a different dude named Dean (Samuel Ball). But when Charlie finally finds Dean, he's a wildly homophobic dude. Ends up Charlie's obsession with his time with Dean isn't because they had a wonderful night together, but because Dean likes to go to gay hangouts and commit hate crimes. What kind of revenge is Charlie looking for? The fragmented flick offers a bunch of different answers, but finding out which one actually happened, and which are fantasies in Charlie's head, is a tall task in a flick this trippy. Threaded in the film are various urban folk tales and legends that serve as a surreal backdrop to this disjointed journey of love, regret, and discovery. But for us LGBT folk, there's a ton of dreamy skin for us to enjoy. Scott Denny ends up on the wrong end of the old woke up in a bathtub with a missing kidney scheme, which lets us see a bit of his cock when he hops up and looks at his wound. That'll have you, well, doing exactly what we see Dan Futterman doing when his neighbors are having loud sex and he's super into it! Don't worry, Mr. Futterman isn't stuck making man butter all by himself throughout the whole movie. Him and Matt Keeslar spice up this edgy film with their crotch warming physiques and bare bottoms when they end up having sex a bit later. Urbania will give you masturbation mania!
