Review

During the 1970s, artsy performers with a homoaffective nature displayed many redeeming qualities. Apart from being sparkling conversationalists, wielders of rapier wit and stylish dressers with a wealth of valuable grooming tips, gents of this bent persuasion were also magnets for chicks eager to indulge in inventive sexual experimentation. Enter Velvet Goldmine (1998). Thanks to writer and director Todd Haynes, the R rated flick is loosely based on the rise and descent into depraved excess of androgynous glam rockers such as Bryan Ferry (who agreed to have his music in the film) and David Bowie (who passed on having his music in the film). Luckily, this magical musical melodrama contains four star full frontal and beautiful buttocks shots of rising stars Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. While dancing on stage, rocker Curt Wild (McGregor) sheds his threads, touches his cock, and bends over to show off his butthole at the 35-minute mark. Encore, encore! Later, the naked babe reveals his T&A as well as his gay feelings for an equally-undressed Brian Slade (Rhys-Meyers). If that’s not erotic enough, Jonathan bares his back, shaft, sac and ass while banging his onscreen lady (Toni Collette) 50 minutes into the pic. Needless to say, these guys are giving a goldmine of velvet skin and sexual inspiration. The movie also includes Christian Bale, Janet McTeer, and the Oscar-nominated costumes of Sandy Powell. Even though we appreciate the glittery wardrobe used in this period piece, Mr. Man would rather have the actors wear nothing at all. Period.
