With the tagline “In the year 2000 hit and run driving is no longer a felony, it’s the national sport!” you know you’re in for a wild ride with Death Race 2000 (1974). From beloved B movie director Paul Bartel, this glimpse into a dystopian future tells the story of a country of chaos. One of the nation’s most important events is a car race in which the drivers are awarded points for the number of innocent people they plow down. Extra credit goes to the most gruesome fatalities. An allegorical tale about our obsession with fast things and violence, 2000 has maintained its relevancy through the years as a time capsule of the invigorated, low-budged storytelling of the 1970’s. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the flick gives some peeks at some sexy retro studs! David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone both go shirtless, while William Shephard bares buns while getting a rub down!
