Government overreach is among the themes explored in the sci-fi action flick Demolition Man (1993), not to be confused with the drama Demolition (2015) starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Despite the fact that critics weren’t totally thrilled with this futuristic thriller, it became a box office hit. Sylvester Stallone plays the eponymous character, John Spartan, who is tracking down serial killer Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes). Did we mention Spartan must be cryogenically frozen and kept on ice for forty years? The fantastical act means we get to ogle Sly’s impressive pecs. If that’s not titillating enough, the Rocky (1976) icon looks like a knockout when he shows off his nude booty! Thawed out in the year 2032, the dark-haired hottie is dispatched to stop Phoenix, who was similarly chilled before being released to execute resistance group leader Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary). The genius of Marco Brambilla’s film is in the details, which include a hilariously prescient mention of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s political successes. The movie also includes Benjamin Bratt, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, and Sandra Bullock, who was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award in the Worst Supporting Actress category. Speaking of prizes, Mr. Snipes scored an MTV Movie Award nomination as Best Villain for his performance. Maybe the honor had something to do with the fact that he flashes his ebony abs on camera. Demolition Man also picked up Saturn noms for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Special Effects, and Best Costumes. Yet Mr. Man thinks the best special effects come with no costumes!
