You’ll be on the edge of a climax while watching From the Edge of the City (1998). Not to be confused with the Martin Ritt flick Edge of the City (1957) starring John Cassavetes and Sidney Poitier, this Greek pic shows how hard it is for immigrants to start anew when they are plagued by stereotypes and preconceived notions in their new land. In this case, we follow the story of a Pontic Greek family ostracized by locals as “Pontios.” Without identity and job prospects, the sexy son Sasha (Stathis Papadopoulos) turns to the streets where he turns tricks for income. And watching him earn easy money makes Mr. Man hard. In other words, even though things look bleak for the pretty protagonist on screen, you may still enjoy a happy ending! Under the pen and direction of Constantine Giannaris, the movie includes Panagiotis Hartomatzidis, Theodora Tzimou, and the skin on Costas Kotsianidis. As Panagiotis, the young hunk goes full frontal while scrubbing up his bare bum in a public shower. The same can be said for Mr. Papadopoulos who flashes his Papabs, Papasack, Papashaft and Papaass under the shower head. It’s enough to make viewers wet! No wonder critics were over the moon for this Greek drama. Perhaps that’s why the movie was heralded at the Greek State Film Awards and the Greek Film Critics Association Awards. We’d love to celebrate the picture’s wins with a round of Spanakopita. Or, considering the revealing roles of these Greek dishes, spanking a peter!
