Review

Before Peter Weir made Master and Commander (2003), Dead Poets Society (1989) and Witness (1985), the Aussie auteur whipped out his impressive… pic Gallipoli (1981), not to be confused with the Australian miniseries Deadline Gallipoli (2015) starring Hugh Dancy. This flick swept at the Australian Institute Awards with wins for Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor (Mel Gibson), Supporting Actor (Bill Hunter), Editing, and Sound. Set in 1910, the historical drama follows idealistic best buds Frank Dunne (Gibson) and Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) as they join the Australian Army during World War I. Sadly, the young men travel to Turkey to fight in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Woefully outmatched by the enemy forces, Frank and Archy painfully discover the horrors of war. Nevertheless, Mr. Man loves to see a man in (and out) of uniform. And fortunately, this movie showcases the onscreen assets of a young Mr. Gibson. The same can be said for Mr. Lee. Amid the gunshots and shrapnel, the beautiful blokes take a break by taking their clothes off to go for a naked swim. While underwater, Mel shows off his muscular physique. In fact, we get to glance at his abs, ass, and a bit of his shaft! Once the guys come up for air, Mark parades his pecs and buns on the beach. Too bad the rest of the story isn’t as uplifting. Considering the fateful outcome, you may be the only one to experience a happy ending. In other words, watch with a box of tissues!
