Review

House of Boys (2009) explores the equally exciting and tragic nature of gay life in the 1980s through a club in Amsterdam called, well, House of Boys. Our lens into the wild, colorful world of homosexual debauchery is the young Frank (a beautiful Layke Anderson), who flees his family for the bright lights of the Venice of the North. With no place to go, he joins the House of Boys, and soon finds himself sliding down a rabbit hole (among other types of holes), filled with glitter, dancing, music, and of course men. It doesn’t take long for Frank to fall for the gorgeous Jake (Benn Northover), and the two eventually find themselves in a romantic relationship. As we mentioned before, House of Boys is peppered with the sadness of the 80s, and the AIDS epidemic ends up interfering with the guys’ newfound love.

Don’t cry just yet, though. This flick is filled more butts, bulges, and tight bods than you can count, and includes some wonderful cabaret scenes that highlight the closeness and uniqueness of this group of friends.
