A car accident sets off a weird chain of events in the sci-fi flick Monkey Shines (1988). When athlete Alan Mann (Jason Beghe) is struck by a truck while jogging, he is faced with the life changing diagnosis of being a quadriplegic. When Alan returns home from the hospital, his hot ass girlfriend (Janine Turner) ditches him for his pompous surgeon (Stanley Tucci); his well-intentioned mother (Joyce Van Patten) does nothing to help the grave situation; his best friend Geoffrey (John Pankow), a brilliant chemist, is lost in his speed addiction; and his less-than-friendly nurse just makes matters worse. With bitterness, depression and anger now dominating Alan’s life, he attempts suicide. All is lost until Geoffrey introduces his despondent buddy to Ella. Nope, Ella is not a caring and sexy woman, she is an intelligent monkey that’s been modified with human tissues. The wheelchair-bound dude and monkey instantly hit it off, and things start improving, so much so that Alan finds himself in a new relationship with Melanie (Kate McNeil). But things get weird when Ella’s telepathic abilities eventually turn her into a receptacle for Alan’s anger, and she goes on a killing spree, single-handedly checking off victims on the quadriplegic’s shit list. Alan knows that if he doesn’t move fast he’s bound to be the maniacal monkey’s next victim. Between all the monkey murdering, Jason Beghe manages to show off his fine behind while exercising in the buff, and Stanley Tucci flaunts his impressive physique while walking around wearing a bath towel. Mr. Man would love to spanks these dudes monkeys!
