America’s golden age of freakish counterculture peaked just after the death of the 1960s. In what era other than the early 1970s could an obese transvestite become an underground star through eating real dog shit in an avant garde film, while sharing top billing with an anus that possessed the singular ability to distend upon command, to music? Such is the genius of aberration showcased in Pink Flamingos (1972), cult director John Waters’s self-proclaimed “exercise in poor taste,” a rollicking travesty that offends and enthralls while following the exploits of Baltimore’s basest lowlifes in a contest to determine the filthiest people alive. This freaky flick is full of fellows letting their fleshy flagpoles flop.  Channing Wilroy, Danny Mills, and David Lochary are the brave dudes that cut through the weird when they lose their duds for your viewing pleasure.
