Biography

Before Roy Scheider became a major movie star, he served in the United States Air Force and was an amateur boxer with nine KOs. Well, that explains why he was such a knockout! Luckily, the New Jersey native hung up his gloves to pursue acting via the drama programs at Rutgers University and Franklin and Marshall College. After graduating, the late actor landed roles on CBS soaps (Love of Life, The Secret Storm) before moving on to movies, including the thriller Klute (1971) and the black comedy Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York (1975). Although Roy was only 5’9”, he seemed taller on the big screen due to his commanding presence in authority roles. Check him out as Detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection (1971) and The Seven-Ups (1973); Police Chief Brody in Jaws (1975) and Jaws 2 (1978); Officer Murphy in Blue Thunder (1983); Colonel Knowles in The Fourth War (1990); and Captain Bridger in the sci-fi series seaQuest DSV (1993-1996). Scheider also played presidents in Executive Target (1997), The Peacekeeper (1997), and Chain of Command (2000). As Agent Levy in Marathon Man (1976), Roy uncovered his chest and bulging boxers! The topless hottie also revealed his pecs while having onscreen sex in the R-rated flick The Men’s Club (1986)! Yet he might be best known for his Oscar-nominated role as choreographer Joe Gideon in All That Jazz (1979). The musical features Jessica Lange, Cliff Gorman, Ben Vereen, and Roy’s naked T&A! Need a bigger (dream)boat? Never!
