Review

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) is a biographical account of a man’s perseverance in the face of great obstacle. Jean-Dominique Bauby (the very hot Mathieu Amalric) develops a neurological condition known as locked-in syndrome, leaving him almost completely paralyzed yet fully conscious. The one bit of him not disabled is his left eye. This single part of the human body becomes the entire portal through which Jean-Dominique must communicate with the world. Through a mind-numbingly tedious system of blinking, Mr. Bauby is able to not only reach out to the people in his life, but also write an entire memoir. We thought brushing our teeth this morning was arduous.

Since this is a French film, Mathieu Amalric speaks in French. Since this has a three star rating on Mr. Man, you know we get to see some banane (French for banana – we thought it would be a more interesting translation). When you add a French-speaking hottie with some bath time peen and balls, you get a truly can’t miss movie. Oh, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was nominated for four Oscars. Come for the drama, stay for the banane.
