National heroes don’t come more unlikely than the publisher of Hustler magazine. America, as deftly and unblinkingly documented in the Academy Award-nominated biographical drama The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), is the land of miracles where a Kentucky-born dirt farmer can become a mega-millionaire by marketing crotch-centered photographs of splay-legged country gals. Of course, there is a price to pay. Larry Flynt, both in real life and on the big screen, is almost martyred for his cause, enduring an assassination attempt and sacrificing the erectile functioning of his penis so that America might remain the land of the free and the home of the neon-pink labia. Woody Harrelson doesn’t show his woodie, but he does share a quick glimpse of his backside and sack as he hops into a female-filled hot tub. It’s only a tease, but it’s enough to please.
