Despite its tantalizing title, Priest of Love (1981) is actually a rather subdued look at the life of celebrated Britishauthor—and notoriously closeted bisexual—D.H. Lawrence, played to winning perfection by Ian McKellen. Following the banning of his then-controversial 1915 novel The Rainbow, Lawrence and his wife Frieda (Janet Suzman) relocate to the United States, finally settling in Mexico. Lawrence contracts tuberculosis shortly thereafter, and the couple leaves Mexico to return to Great Britain, but it's a trip the couple takes to Italy which inspires ultimately Lawrence to write his masterwork, Lady Chatterly's Lover. While Lawrence's bisexuality is only hinted at in the film, focusing instead on how his relationship with Frieda was the basis for Lady Chatterly, the moments that dance around it are glorious in their male nudity. Ian McKellen and Graham Faulkner go skinny dipping early in the film, both baring all as they frolic in the ocean, and they're even caught by some soldiers as they towel off! This Priest of Love is nothing short of sacri-licious!
