Review

Plenty of young poets idolize Arthur Rimbaud, the wild Frenchman who wrote most of his collections of poems while still just a teenager. Some because of his way with words, others because he had a way of getting supposedly straight dudes into bed with him. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the rebellious wunderkind in Total Eclipse (1995), a sensitive portrayal of the young poet’s tumultuous relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis). A little more than a year after What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993) scored him an Oscar nomination, Leo is a seventeen-year-old Rimbaud who crashes at the pad of Paul and his pregnant wife Mathilde (Romane Bohringer). Mr. Rimbaud's a rowdy tease, which leads Paul to hate his wife and covet the youngster's body. They start boning, and eventually the abused wife gets super pissed off, but not as upset as Verlaine gets after Rimbaud's constant treachery towards him. Eventually there are gunshots, prison sentences for sodomy, and a wildly poetic ending to this intimate portrayal of penis loving poets. Such a steamy and aggressive homoerotic tryst is worth more than a couple of lines of verse. These two show off their spectacularly sensual bodies, booties and wiggly bad boys to boot! David Thewlis goes full frontal during a fist fight between him and Leo, where David is entirely naked. It's not the manliest brawl, but it lets us see his manhood! Later, they'll make up by making love, with young Leo thrusting into David's derriere. Leo shows his ass and dick both when he's old and missing a leg, lying on the floor and coughing to death, as well as when he jumps out of a window naked to flee a bit of adultery he doesn't want to get caught in the midst of. Who knew a good poem got you so much dome? The fellas in Total Eclipse will have you licking your lips with every thrust of their hips!
