Earlier in the week we briefly mentioned A Very Natural Thing when highlighting movies that Amazon Prime was streaming for Pride Month and this made us think fondly of the 1974 film. For today's Throwback Thursday, let's really take a deep, hard look at the classic gay romance in A Very Natural Thing. Spoiler alert: there are cocks! 1970's cocks!
The film was directed by Christopher Larkin who highlighted the relationship between a 26-year-old former monk who now teaches in New York City. Robert McLane plays this good-boy-turned-hot-school-teacher perfectly.
He meets Mark in a gay bar and the two instantly fall in love. Is it any wonder why? Just look at Curt Gareth!
Their relationship is instant. Everything moves so fast and sexily that we see them naked within the first 13 minutes which is a huge win for us, the viewers. Of course, when something starts this good it isn't likely to last and the drama soon starts as the two men realize they have very different takes on monogamy.
Whether or not this couple can make their relationship work is the central question in the movie. Our main question is: can we see more cock? Luckily, the answer is yes.
This film was the only one from director Christopher Larkin whose life was met with tragedy. The film was not successful, but that's hardly a surprise given the subject matter and the time. In 1988 he ended his life, but we are so grateful that he gave us this piece of himself before doing so. The co-screenwriter Joe Coencas, on the other hand, is living with his husband in New York. There can be a happy ending after all!
