If you have not seen the film Zola yet, run. Don't walk! Go see it. It is a fun fever dream filmed in gorgeous Floridian color palates. The A24 produced film that was based on a very famous Twitter thread from a woman named Zola told the story of a new friend she made, a stripper, who asked her to come with her to Florida to dance for extra cash. Zola thought this would be a fun girls trip filled with money, but the new "friend" had a hidden agenda!
Part of that hidden agenda was to do some extra sex work, something that Zola said she didn't do. Luckily, the other girl played by Riley Keough does do that. I say luckily because we get to see, for once, a female sex worker scene that focuses on the clients. That means that, yes, we basically just see nudity from the men - and there are A LOT of men.
When you see this scene, your jaw will be on the floor. There are so many cocks. This is a veritable parade of penises of all different shapes and sizes. It's very exciting! So how did director Janicza Bravo cast the men?
She described the casting process in an interview on A24's website where she explained that she really wanted a variety of men of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and colors. She explained that she wanted to see "normal" men rather than chiseled actors. She wound up finding what she was looking for by casting local nudists. That's very smart! They went to one of the largest nudist colonies in the country and that is where they found their nude extras.
She said, "I didn’t want to look at their photos and be like, That's a nice head. Those are great balls. So I ended up looking at faces...Then I had an hour or two-hour phone conversation with each of them, all in one weekend." She even described how one potential penis actor said he looked Riley up and thought she was hot, so that guy was not cast. She needed nude professionals only!
Here's another fun fact: since these men were nudists, a lot of them did not own underwear. They were all supposed to start in their boxers or briefs and take them off. But many of the men didn't own a pair, so the costume designer had to do some last-minute shopping.
Did any of the men get too excited? It turns out that some of them did! She explained that some of them were turned on by Riley, but some were turned on by the exhibitionism of it all. "You can’t shoot a hard penis; that makes it a different movie rating. We had to give some guys a minute to cool off."
If only she was able to do an NC-17 version of this film! Regardless of how many hard or flaccid dicks she could actually show, this is a masterful montage and we haven't seen anything like this in a mainstream film. It's nearly a full minute of cocks!
