Even though he stands at 5’ 3”, the diminutive Denis Lavant has a powerful presence on screen. Instead of possessing traditional leading man looks, the French thespian has a memorable face that’ll haunt your dreams in a good way. After training at the Paris Conservatoire, Denis scored supporting stints on stage (Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice), on film (Les Misérables), and on TV (L’Ombre sur la plage) in the early eighties. A few years later, he caught his big break with the starring role in the film Boy Meets Girl (1984). Since then, Denis exposed his wide… range in Leos Carax’s erotic drama The Night Is Young (1986) and love story Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991), both with Juliette Binoche; the crime drama Wild Animals (1997); the period piece Don Juan (1998) with Penélope Cruz; the slasher movie Deep in the Woods (2000); and the comedy Mister Lonely (2007) with Diego Luna, Samantha Morton, and Werner Herzog. When Lavant re-teamed with filmmaker Carax on the fantasy film Holy Motors (2012), he hit a career high since he was named Best Actor at the Chicago International Film Festival! Denis also won us over with topless turns in L’etoile du jour (2012) and Eva Doesn’t Sleep (2015). The former features Lavant dancing around with a half-naked Iggy Pop, while the latter has him fighting a similarly (un)dressed Nicolas Gold. The only thing hotter than seeing two shirtless dudes fight, is watching them engage in interpretive choreography. All we have to say is, “Merci beaucoup!”
