Biography

Jörg Buttgereit is an avant-garde auteur, a German writer/director known for his controversial, highly experimental, and extremely erotic horror films, including most prominently Nekromantik (1987). Growing up in West Berlin while the Berlin Wall was still intact and the Federal Republic of Germany was under control of the Allied Forces, Buttgereit was exposed to cinema from not only his own native country, but Britain, France, and America as well. Though his tastes expanded, he held a special affinity for the monster movies of his youth, which would continue to influence his own gore heavy films. Throughout the years, Jörg experimented with the form, beginning with shorts he'd shoot on his Super 8 camera, a gift from his first Holy communion. Never one to shy away from shock value, his pictures often featured grotesque body horror and blood elements as well as a generous helping of male nudity. Jörg himself has made some titillating cameos in a couple of his pictures, including the anthology film The Death King (1990) where he appears as a shirtless torture victim who gets his prosthetic penis sliced off by some sadistic sirens. Ouch!  For a less wince inducing look at his fantastically fit physique, check out Corpse Fucking Art (1987), a behind-the-scenes exposé on a number of his productions, where the director walks around set in only a pair of blue jeans. Sadly no butt shots from Buttgerreit, but hey, how often do we get to see a director in a film at all, let alone shirtless and in this great of shape?
