Love Rites (1987) was the final feature film of Polish filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk who directed the borderline pornographic re-telling of "Beauty and the Beast" known simply as The Beast (1975), the nunsploitation classic Behind Convent Walls (1978), and the sexually charged anthology film Immoral Women (1979), so that should give you a solid idea of what to expect here. The film centers on Hugo (Mathieu Carrière) a self-centered fashion buyer whose sexual desires lean toward the masochistic. While in Paris for a fashion buyers conference, he meets a young woman on the train named Myriam (Marina Pierro) who seems more than willing to satisfy all of his darkest desires. Little does he know that she's actually a "woman of the evening" and has been hired to lure Hugo into a trap that's been set for him. The morning after spending the night with Myriam, he stumbles through the streets of Paris where he suddenly finds himself wanted for the murder of a young woman who looks an awful lot like Myriam. With few options remaining, Hugo must go underground to avoid being arrested and see if there's any way he can retrace his steps and figure out just who—or what—is behind all of this as his very life may depend upon it! As much as Borowczyk's films are steeped in sex and nudity, there's often little in the way of male nudity in his films. Sadly he didn't right this wrong with this film, but we do at least get to see Mathieu Carrière's bare ass in a pair of sex scenes! It's just a damn shame we didn't get to see the complete package!
