Review

Based on a true story, Some Mother's Son (1996) is about a 1981 hunger strike in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland. IRA prisoner Bobby Sands  (John Lynch) leads a protest against the treatment of IRA prisoners, arguing they should be treated as prisoners of war and not criminals. Helen Mirren and Fionnula Flanagan play the mothers of two of the strikers, who must decide to support their son’s wishes or have them forcibly fed to save their lives. If you hear “men’s prison” and think “lots and lots of male nudity,” then you might be a bit disappointed in this flick. But, the sight of co-striker Aidan Gillen clad in only towel, walking along with another nearly-nude Irish hottie, and a bonus brief glimpse of Gillen’s buns while he’s lying in bed, makes it all better.
