Music superstar David Bowie gets the Jackie Jormp-Jomp treatment in this unauthorized chronicle of the singer's first American tour in 1971 and how he came up with the inspiration for his glam rock persona Ziggy Stardust. Brit rocker Johnny Flynn stars as the transgressive rocker before he became the fully formed glam rock god we all know and love, who is desperate to break out in a big way in America. The only problem is that everyone at Mercury Records hates his debut album "The Man Who Sold the World" except for one guy, Ron Oberman (Marc Maron). Bowie must leave behind his pregnant wife Angie (Jena Malone) and go to America where he's going to embark on a coast-to-coast tour with nothing but his own belief in himself and his music, while he can never really be sure if Oberman actually sees his talent or just thinks he can mold him into a standard pop star like everyone else. The film suffers greatly as a result of Bowie's estate denying the filmmakers access to any of Bowie's music, so instead he plays mostly covers of songs that Bowie also covered during this time period such as Jacques Brel's "Amsterdam" or The Yardbirds' "I Wish You Would." Don't go in expecting the definitive look at Bowie's life and music as this just isn't it, but if you want to see Johnny Flynn channel everyone's favorite space oddity via a pair of skimpy tighty whities, this is a great place for that! There's also a scene where Jeremy Legat bulges out a pink spandex bodysuit! Talk about "Fashion!"
