Mature film fans will remember matinee idol Victor Mature. Thanks to his virility and versatility, the leading man was a box office dream rivaling Hollywood heartthrobs Clark Gable and Errol Flynn onscreen. After making his movie debut in the comedy The Housekeeper’s Daughter (1939), the handsome hunk exposed his… range in musicals (Footlight Serenade, Seven Days’ Leave, Song of the Islands) and film noirs (Cry of the City, Kiss of Death, The Las Vegas Story, Moss Rose). We especially enjoyed I Wake Up Screaming (1941) since the crime flick features Betty Grable and Victor’s bulging swimming trunks. If that’s not hot enough, the hottie flaunts his muscular chest! Since Vic steamed up the screen whenever he removed his shirt, he was cast as topless swashbucklers in Captain Caution (1940) and The Veils of Bagdad (1954). In between, Mature’s abs and gams could be seen in the prehistoric fantasy One Million B.C. (1940). The 6’2” stud also donned skimpy costumes in the Roman-set pics Androcles and the Lion (1952) and The Robe (1953) with Jean Simmons. But not before he wowed Hedy Lamarr (and audiences everywhere) by parading his wet pecs in Cecil B. DeMille’s Biblical saga Samson and Delilah (1949). During his career, Mature portrayed Doc Holliday in the John Ford Western My Darling Clementine (1946) and singer/songwriter Paul Dresser in the biopic My Gal Sal (1942). The latter co-starred Vic’s fiancée Rita Hayworth. Even though they didn’t marry, Mature went on to wed five other women. Can’t say we blame them!
