The romantic musical Yentl (1983) stars Barbara Streisand as the titular character, the tomboy-ish only child of a strict Ashkenazi Rabbi, who secretly teaches the Talmud to her, despite such practices being illegal in Poland. When her father dies, Yentl is left alone in the world to fend for herself. She eventually decides to dress like a man, adopt the name of her late brother, Anshel, and enroll in Rabbinical school where she befriends and eventually falls in love with Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin). But it looks like Avigdor is spoken for; he’s engaged to Haddas (Amy Irving), who begins to crush on Anshel. Now that’s one bizarre love triangle! You’ll be playing with your dreidel when you get a gander at Mandy Patinkin’s posterior as he goes for a skinny dip. Oy, vey!
