Openly gay actor, comedian, and podcast diva Bowen Yang has been doing a press tour for his upcoming film, The Wedding Banquet. This comedy promises a lot of laughs and a nude scene. A nude scene?! And he's happy about it? Oh, we have to talk about this.
Bowen Yang has been sneaking skin in here and there. The Saturday Night Live star has had blurred nudity on the popular sketch comedy show, including a hilarious sketch where he was singing butt-naked with an equally naked Emma Stone. What a dream! He also showed off his buttcrack in a jockstrap in the beloved comedy Fire Island.
But this is something new!
The Wedding Banquet stars Bowen Yang as a gay man who proposes a green card marriage to his female friend. What's in it for her? Besides hanging out with Yang, he tells her he will pay for her IVF treatment. That sounds easy enough, but his Korean grandmother hears the news and plans an over-the-top wedding banquet.
Andrew Ahn directed this remake and put a modern spin on it. It's an adaptation of an Ang Lee movie from 1993 which is iconic queer viewing. We don't want to spoil anything, but Yang has a hookup that winds up briefly baring booty when he gets out of bed. Yang says that he was happy to do the scene. He actually thought it was necessary for the plot. He told all of this to Entertainment Weekly where he had lovely quotes on his nudity.
He said of his nude scene: "It was something that for anyone other than Andrew Ahn, I would've been like, 'Let's talk about coverage,' and 'I'm not going to show nip,' and 'I'm not going to show butt. I would've gotten really granular about that. But there was just something about playing the comedy of that scene, which is such a shocking moment. And then you're supposed to believe that these two people are so good about moving past it and then immediately having to de-queer the house in a way that cleanses the stakes."
Also, no prosthetics were used for his ass. In fact, he makes a point of telling Entertainment Weekly that it IS his real ass. He went on to describe the scene by joking, "You will be able to tell from the flat topography of my buttocks that I bare it all." Okay, I'll be the judge of that!
We can't wait to see it! The film is out now in theaters, so get your butt in a seat to check out his seat meat. In the meantime, let's check out that musical nudity sketch I was talking about earlier.
