Is Richard Armitage gay? This is the question that the fifty one year old Obsession star was bracing himself for throughout his entire career:
I was always waiting for that question to punch me in the face, and it never did. I thought ‘are people being polite, or is it that they don’t want to know?’
However it was just this week that Armitage - most famous for playing Thorin in The Hobbit Trilogy and recently in the news for his scandalous Netflix series Obsession - came out publicly as queer.
During an interview with Radio Times, Armitage revealed that he is currently partnered with a man. But he's has known for a long time that he's queer, and he even came out to his close friends and family at the age of nineteen. Now Armitage is done with being in the closet publicly, and revealed that he identifies with the younger generation's perspective on sexual and gender fluidity, stating:
I love the conversation with the younger generation; I love the idea that whatever gender, sexuality, the fluidity of who you love, how you identify, is not fixed.
That was always a thing: if I declare who I am and my sexuality, then I’m saying it’s fixed. I don’t know that, or if I might feel something for somebody further down the line. I doubt it, but I don’t know.
Armitage's self-imposed Don't Say Gay policy is embraced by a number of his peers, such as Luke Evans and Lukas Gage, who prefer to keep the details of their sexuality under wraps and open to interpretation.
