We love Dev Patel here. I may as well be the president of the Dev Patel fan club because every time he is in a movie, I see it immediately and I pray to the movie gods for nudity. His latest movie is a departure from some of his other work and that is because he directed it and he stars in it. Let's talk about the rave reviews for his latest film Monkey Man which premiered at SXSW.
Monkey Man is a gory, highly-stylized film about a young man who makes money fighting in a secret fight club while wearing a gorilla mask. He gets beaten up night after night by beloved fighters for money. After years of doing this and suppressing his anger about the way he makes his living and the traumas of his childhood, he gets involved in a secret elite group where he seeks revenge. It's like John Wick meets Nope meets Monkeys and Dev Patel is at the center of it all!
Critics are calling this the latest action obsession that we are all going to devour when it has a wide release. 33-year-old actor-turned-director Dev Patel got a standing ovation for his directorial debut which has since opened with a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Is he the next Jordan Peel? Jordan Peel was the executive producer for the film, so he clearly saw something in the young man's violent story.
Dev Patel has also been an actor who takes big swings. He has come a long way from starring in Skins where he made his barely-legal nude debut by showing his ass with his friends. He followed that up with the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. He took a step back after that, but when he returned to the screen he was grown and sexy!
He returned with hot male roles in tense dramas like Lion and The Wedding Guest which had me salivating, but he took it to the next level by starring in the A24 film The Green Knight.
