Helmut was born in Austria and tried to study acting in London, but he eventually went to Italy to really begin his acting career. He started acting with the director Luchino Visconti as an extra in his movies, but the director took interest in him...a very special interest. We can see why. Young Helmut was an Adonis. Luchino helped launch his career, giving him his star-making role in Ludwig.
Luchino and Helmut became companions and had a fulfilling 12-year relationship until Luchino's death in 1976. Helmut has always been openly bisexual and was said to have had affairs with Tab Hunter, Linda Blair, Elizabeth Taylor, and ballet icon Rudolf Nureyev. Everyone wanted him and we can see why!
Berger often played sexual characters who were also internally tormented which is essentially what Dorian Gray is all about. Dorian Gray is a classic Oscar Wilde story about an extraordinarily handsome and youthful man who doesn't age and it turns out (spoiler alert) it's because there is a portraitof him that gets uglier.
