Val Kilmer has wrestled with his image for years which is what the new documentary Val examines. You might think to yourself "a Val Kilmer documentary? Why?" It turns out that the why is very complicated and intimate as we are invited to see what Val Kilmer's life is like and why he thinks he was labeled "difficult" for so many years.
Oh, plus there's nudity.
This documentary shines a light on Val's acting techniques - he tends to delve into method acting in which he "loses himself" in a role and stays in character off set - and all of the different choices he's made throughout his career. We also see the ways in which those choices affected his career.
Not only do we see plenty of scenes from Val's greatest movies, but he also loved to film things himself. It turns out that Val Kilmer was a home movies kind of guy! We get a ton of never-before-seen footage of Val Kilmer and friends hanging out and being themselves - like when he and Sean Penn moon the camera.
Val has fascinating home video footage of him and Kurt Russell, Kevin Bacon, Tom Cruise, and even Marlon Brando. He was a little documentarian himself! How adorable! Plus, we get footage of him hanging out in the wilderness wearing his all-natural nothing outfit.
We loved watching Val Kilmer previously show his ass in Wonderland and we even enjoyed his performance as Jim Morrison in The Doors despite the fact that he used a body double.
He talks about those roles and how they affected him and so much more in this surprisingly tender documentary from directors Ting Poo and Leo Scott. Who knew there was so much to learn about Val Kilmer?
I no longer think that he was a "difficult" actor, but I do have difficulty understanding why he used that body double when he played Jim Morrison. It's okay. I'll get over it, but still! If you're going to be a "method actor" then use whatever method it takes to show that ass. Okay, I'll calm down and just appreciate these scenes for what they are because, honestly, they are still pretty damn hot.
