One of our favorite directors announced over the weekend that he is going to remake one of our favorite movies. The director in question? Luca Guadagnino! He is fresh off of his popular box office hit Challengers which turned everyone on. Now what about the movie? The movie is American Psycho, the classic horror satire that introduced us all to Christian Bale's buff body. What's the story here and how gay will it be? Let's check it out.
Mary Harron directed the original 2000 adaptation of the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. I recently talked about the wild story behind the making of this film and I really encourage you to read that because it is bonkers. Because of that history, I have to admit that I feel somewhat reluctant about this remake news. I know that Luca Guadagnino gives us gorgeous gay themes and scenes featuring hot men doing very hot things, but Harron's film is so good.
She gave us Christian Bale as the original Wall Street psychopath Patrick Bateman. Bateman has now become synonymous with the term "psychopath". He is a fictional character meant to satirize 80s excess. He is a successful banking executive who works out every day and schedules everything from his work to his social activities. He loves to be the best yuppie that a yuppy can be in 1980s New York City and that sometimes involves killing. Whoops!
The film is a satire which a lot of audiences and critics missed at the time. That's okay - that happens with satires a lot. The film went on to become a cult classic and it's now a widely celebrated classic film. 25 years after the original film was released, Guadagnino wants to take his stab at it - no pun intended.
How will Luca Guadagnino make his film different from Harron's? Will he make it somehow gayer? It appears that he will make a "fresh" adaptation of the novel rather than remake the film itself. Apparently, Lionsgate has been wanting to do a faithful or modernized adaptation of the book itself but has been struggling with writers and directors giving them a fresh idea in several Hollywood meetings. Luca finally broke through!
Luca's films are not explicitly gay, but the gay director does enjoy casting hunky men and putting them in homosexual situations ripe with sexual tension. He gave all of Gen Z a sexual awakening with his hit film Challengers, featuring bisexual tones between Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor. It was super sexy. It's so sexy that we should watch it as we wait to see what will happen in the brand-new American Psycho!
