8 Mile (2002)

Yo, yo, yo! The hip-hop biopic 8 Mile (2002) tells the story of Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith (Eminem), a young white rapper dwelling on the mean streets of Detroit in the late 90s, trying desperately to launch a rap career in hopes of escaping his trailer park existence with his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger), his lil’ sister Lily (Chloe Greenfield), and mom’s abusive live-in boyfriend Greg (Michael Shannon). While B-Rabbit has the rhyming skills and the drive to make a name for himself in the rap world, he lacks the confidence to rock the mic in front of a crowd, especially after he loses a rap battle at a nightclub and flees in humiliation. But with the encouragement of his home boy Future (Mekhi Phifer), Jimmy grabs the microphone and gets back in the saddle, competing in a major rap battle against the best on the block, destroying the enemy and creating a bright future of penning misogynistic, homophobic rhymes to be consumed by an idiotic public with little to no appreciate for anything resembling quality music. Oh, and Eminem shows his butt during a rap battle. Word!
