Colonel Redl (1985)

Some would say that this is loosely based on a true story, but who knows as that term gets thrown around quite a bit, especially for war time period pieces like this!  This one takes place during the waning years of the once great Austro-Hungarian empire as it comes close to the opening days of the first world war.  With the empire in steep decline and facing a massive wartime push, we follow the ambitious Colonel Redl (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who is about as power hungry and driven as anyone in the military around this time, but he has a dangerous secret...  He's not only giving military secrets to the Russians, he's also working as an intelligence informant by lying about the men in his own ranks to climb the ladder of military success!  So he's a traitor, a liar, but the biggest thing he has racking his consciousness with guilt is his hidden homosexuality, which could very well get him in just as serious trouble as being a spy.  Once the Colonel gets to be the head of the intelligence division, all his secrets begin to unravel and he's going to be ensnared in some classic political deception that is only going to drive him deeper and deeper into the world of espionage and lies.  We get a nice little nude scene from Tamás Major and the titular Colonel, played by Klaus Maria Brandauer, gives us a love scene and some light man on man loving in this one!
