For today's Foreign Film Friday, I want to look at a forgotten German classic. Not only is it a good film, but it also has a sexy gay scene. How's that for a reason to keep reading? Let's take a look at Ivan Szabo's war drama Colonel Redl.
This film takes place during the final days of the Austro-Hungarian empire that focuses on the made-up character of Alfred Redl who is a young and ambitious officer in the military who climbs the ladder to eventually become the head of the secret police. Corruption, power, and ambition are the focus of this movie set in a world of political upheaval.
Colonel Redl is played by Klaus Maria Brandauer who manages to let us see his hairy chest when he is laying in bed next to a lucky lady. He also smooches with his dude played by Tamás Major who shows major ass as he gets busy in bed. While they never get in bed together, we do appreciate seeing some butt. We can get behind that - literally!
Colonel Redl was released shortly after the 1981 Oscar-winning film Mephisto which was made by the same director. For whatever reason, this movie did not pop internationally the way that Mephisto did, but it's fairly on par with that critically acclaimed masterpiece. One thing is for certain: both movies starred Klaus Maria being sexy. Ivan Szabo knew his way around that man on camera!
