Jersey Girl (2004)

Kevin Smith tries his heavy hand at romantic comedy in the saccharine sweet tearjerker Jersey Girl (2004). When Oliver’s (Ben Affleck) wife Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez) dies during childbirth, he attempts to avoid his grief and his fatherly duties by burying himself in his work as a powerful media publicist, leaving his father (George Carlin) to come to his rescue and take care of his child, Gertie. Once dear ol’ dad puts his foot down, Oliver finds himself in a literal shit storm of dirty diapers and a child that seems to be perpetually crying. When a stressful outburst costs Oliver his job, he moves back in with his father in New Jersey. Fast-forward seven years, Gertie is now in elementary school, and when she’s not watching films, she’s prodding her father to find a new love. Life changes for the better when Oliver crosses paths with Maya (Liv Tyler), the cute and probing video store clerk. The prospects of a new job, coupled with the opportunity to move back to NYC, soon kills any romance and puts Oliver at odds with his immediate family. During a happier moment of the film, Affleck removes his pants during a make out session on the staircase, teasing the slightest of bulges.
