King David (1985)

Acclaimed Australian director Bruce Beresford (Breaker Morant, Driving Miss Daisy) followed up his first Best Director Oscar nominated film Tender Mercies (1983) with an even more ambitious Hollywood effort, the biblical epic King David (1985). Hunk du jour Richard Gere stars as the titular third ruler of the kingdom of Israel, who initially rejects the prophecy that he will come to rule Israel. However, once he slays the colossus known as Goliath in the first underdog battle in history, he begins to embrace his destiny, eventually working his way up to being crowned king. Bible scholars will tell you that he wasn't the best king, however, choosing to ignore the advice of those closest to him and rule with vanity and ego. While we think it might have been a little out of place in a biblical epic, it would've been nice if this flick had allowed Richard Gere the opportunity to hang some dong like he did in American Gigolo (1980). Thankfully, he does spend a good deal of time sans shirt, with the sexiest scene coming an hour and eleven minutes in when he dances shirtless in broad daylight!
