La Cage aux Folles II (1980)

La Cage aux Folles (1978) was an Oscar nominated sensation which eventually got a Tony winning Broadway musical in 1983 and a star studded American remake with The Birdcage (1996). Before all of that, however, the 1978 original got a direct sequel just two years later with the unimaginatively titled La Cage aux Folles II (1980). Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazzi are back as Albin and Renato, the respectively flamboyant and more buttoned down couple who own the titular nightclub where Albin performs in drag every night in a show which Renato choreographs and directs in addition to managing the club. In this film, the pair is caught up in international espionage and intrigue when a dying spy plants a crucial piece of microfilm in Albin's purse—unbeknownst to him—putting the couple smack dab in the middle of a lightweight James Bond type of globe trotting adventure. The couple decides to head for the mountains of Italy where Renato's mother still runs a farm, not knowing that they've got the entire spy world hot on their heels in pursuit of this microfilm to which Albin in completely oblivious! The brilliantly beautiful Benny Luke is also back in the sequel as Jacob, the butler to the two main characters and here he's given another chance to show off his sexy body in a French maid outfit! It's a real shame that's the closest we get to nudity in this sequel, but there was one more La Cage sequel several years later, so there may be hope further down the road!
