Review

The Spanish cult classic thriller Arrebato (1980), or Rapture, was critically acclaimed in its time but went mostly undiscovered by audiences until the advent of home video several years later, only growing in stature since that time. The film stars Eusebio Poncela—whom you may remember for his gay sex scene with Antonio Banderas in Almodóvar's Law of Desire—as horror film director and heroin addict José, whose relationship with his leading lady and muse Ana (Cecilia Roth) is as passionate as it is destructive. One day, José receives a package in the mail containing two audio cassette tapes which contain secretly recorded meetings that José had with Pedro (Will More), his ex-girlfriend's cousin. The encounters on the tape reveal that Pedro turned José on to a new style of filming that is as addictive in its execution as the heroin he regularly uses, leading José down a rabbit hole of memories and flashbacks that threaten to completely unravel the filmmaker's already fragile state of mind. The intersection of art, addiction, and madness is drawn together throughout the film, which is every bit as unconventional in its methods as it is in its storytelling. While the film may not work for every audience member, it is sure to be an experience no viewer will soon forget. The undeniable highlights of the film are a pair of nude scenes from leading man Eusebio Poncela, who bares all while stripping down to go to sleep, showing off his cock and balls, and he also flashes his ass later in the flick while pleasuring his woman!
