Biography

Scotland-born Anthony McMillan is now known as Sir Robbie Coltrane. Yet James Bond fans will know him as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky from GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). And movie-goers of a certain age will know him as Rubeus Hagrid from J.K. Rolwing’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010) and Part 2 (2011). After attending the University of Edinburgh, the rising star took his last name from jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Since then, the award-winning actor, comedian and author has been courting fame on the theater stage (The Slab Boys, Threads); on film (Mona Lisa, Nuns on the Run, Henry V, Ocean’s Twelve, Great Expectations); and on TV (Lead Balloon, Robbie Coltrane Critical Evidence, Urban Myths). Years ago, the boob tube bloke co-starred with Emma Thompson on the sketch series Alfresco (1983-1984) and the miniseries Tutti Frutti (1987), for which he nabbed a British Academy Television Award nomination. Robbie would win three for Cracker (1993-2006). But not before he picked up the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy at the Evening Standard British Film Awards. The larger-than-life performer didn’t win us over until he lost his top in National Treasure (2016). The four-part series features Julie Walters, Andrea Riseborough, and Coltrane’s big bare chest. National Treasure? Robbie is more like an international treasure!
