The comedic Western Sam Whiskey (1969) co-stars the youthfully handsome Burt Reynolds as the titular character, a roguish sort of fellow with a penchant for gambling and adventure. Sam’s adventurous spirit is stroked by Laura Breckenridge (Angie Dickinson), a bawdy widow that seduces him into retrieving a quarter of a million dollars of gold bars from a sunken riverboat resting at the bottom of the Platte River, a twenty-four carat jackpot stolen from the Denver Mint by her late hubby. Laura is worried about her family name being tarnished by her thieving late husband, and she wants to get the stolen loot back to the Mint before it’s discovered missing. With a reward of more vagina and twenty grand large, Sam gathers up his buddies Jed (Ossie Davis) and O.W. Bandy (Clint Walker) to harvest the submerged treasure. Everything is going smoothly until a stalking group of outlaws led by Fat Henry Hobson (Rick Davis) shows up and steals the loot. Things look grim for Sam and his five-figure reward, but the crafty character use his ingenuity and creativity to foil Fat Henry and his henchmen. The flick with have you laughing until it hurts, but it will also have you rubbing until you squirt, especially when you get a gander at Burt Reynolds in his prime, shirtless and taking a plein air bath. We’ll take a shot of Mr. Whiskey any day!
